Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka

Nuwara Eliya is located at 1890 meters above sea level. It lies below Mount Pedro, or Pidurutalagala, which is the tallest peak on the island.
Nuwara Eliya’s warm climate has transformed it into a resort that draws both Sri Lankan and foreign tourists to the annual event from February to April. Horse racing, motor cross and clay pigeon firing are all part of the celebrations. Accommodation rates are the downside to the season. The accommodation rates will rise because of the thousands of tourists who flock to Nuwara Eliya. This reduces the number options for accommodation.
Although Nuwara Eliya was inhabited in the early periods of the kingdom, the existence and beauty of the “Eliya”, (Sinhala for opening or clearing), valley nestled among the green hills wasn’t known by Colonial British until John Davy, a colonial civil servant, discovered it in 1819. The British didn’t realize this potential for a decade. Nuwara Eliya was converted by Governor Edward Barnes into a commercial center and a coffee-planting facility in the 1830s. Samuel Baker, a great colonial explorer introduced English vegetable gardening at Nuwara-Eliya in 1847. Nuwara Eliya is the largest producer of European vegetables in Sri Lanka and distributes its all-vegetable produce to the rest.
Sir James Taylor introduced the practice of tea plantation in Sri Lanka in 1870s after the Coffee Blight. This resulted in the development of Nuwara Ella into the center of the tea-growing central highlands of Sri Lanka. In 1867, the Loolakandara Estate was home to the first experimental plantation. It is located between Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. The highland railway track was extended from Nanu Oya to Nuwara Eliya in 1885.
